Astrology: Double Whammy in Aries!

Aries New Moon on April 14th – while the Sun shines in that same fiery sign (until 4/20). Expect some volatile, combustible, impulsive happenings.  Beware of rash moves and acting/speaking without thinking, but do take advantage of all that good aggressive Aries physicality. Go for it!

*BTWBy April 15th, Tax Day, the quick moving Moon will be in the stubborn, money sign of Taurus.  Don’t wait until the last minute – Mercury, also in Taurus, is slowing down and will go retrograde on Saturday 4/17. As it prepares its backward trek, it might cause some confusion in the finance department.  Early prep and early mailing is best. (Just sayin’…)

Astrology: Pisces Moon This Weekend

On Friday evening April 9th, the moon gentles its way into sensitive, creative Pisces. Don’t let “feelings” overwhelm you or lose your grip on the real.  A Pisces Moon may have you looking for an escape to another world, but stay grounded this weekend.  (You can hold on until the Moon moves into its next sign.) Be as caring and compassionate as you wish, just don’t be taken in by any promises or sad stories.

Early Monday morning, April 12th, we are thrust into the in your face, high energy, high octane 2 ½ days of an Aries Moon. Stand up for yourself, but be nice.

Mad About “Mad Men”

I love the AMC series, “Mad Men”. Its 3rd season has just been released on a 4 disk DVD set and we hardcore fans are hoping for an early 4th season, but will probably have to wait until August to get the next intravenous direct line.

With a great cast led by Jon Hamm and January Jones, the show includes super work by John Slattery, Christina Hendricks, Robert Morse, and Elizabeth Moss.  Everyone is just so present and “there”.   Good actors, but also a good writer, the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner.

“Mad Men” has developed such a cult following that there are watching parties around the country and water cooler catch up is the thing to do on Monday mornings.  The mid 20th century attitudes, clothing and behavior (3 martini lunches, smoking everywhere, personal secretaries that give benefits and “politically incorrect” remarks) are highlighted in the intrigues and escapades of the men and women of Madison Avenue advertising agency “Sterling Cooper”.

The “good old days” weren’t that good for everyone, but, watching “Mad Men” work its way thru the 60’s reminds me of all the options – good and bad- that are available to us now and I realize that “multiple choice” can make the present so much more challenging than the past with its stereotypes.  The old days weren’t that terrific, (although I really liked wearing “summer” gloves to work) but, those times were simpler and perhaps that simplicity, with its mask of family values, is really what nostalgia is all about.

I love this show, the characters have dimensions and layers, the main man, Korean War vet Don Draper, is a philanderer with skills, has tons of secrets and can change personalities at the drop of his fedora. Who will he be next? Will he be radicalized by the 60’s revolution and grow his hair long or will he try to hold on to the traditional, rarified atmosphere of Sterling Cooper?  Can’t wait for the next season of “Mad Men”.

FYI: Seasons 1, 2 and 3 are now all on DVD if you want to catch up = Netflix works too.

Astrology: Moon into Business-Like Capricorn

The Moon changes signs about every 2 1/2 days . Out of the peppy Fire sign Sagittarius – next stop the serious, organized Earth sign Capricorn.  You can use the new energy to focus, accomplish, complete and be in charge!

Next, the Moon will move into the innovative, free spirit Air sign of Aquarius in the early morning of Wednesday 4/7/10. Expect the unexpected.

Astrology: Sag Moon – Good Times!

Perk up! The Moon has moved out of brooding, intense Scorpio and into optimistic, upbeat Sagittarius.  We always feel a lift in spirits after this transition. Thoughts turn to travel and adventure – fun.  But, go easy on the chocolate bunny treats.

(We’ll get back to business on Sunday evening with the Moon shift into responsible, Capricorn.)

Happy Easter!

Astrology: Full Moon In Libra – Smile, Redecorate!

There was a full Moon in Libra on 3/29/10. The Moon will remain in this sign until Wednesday 5:18am PDT/ 8:13am EDT, so we will continue to feel the effects of this sign’s “put yourself on people” energy.  Smile and be social.  No werewolf worries!

Libra Moons can make us cooperative, social, charming and there may be an urge to beautify. This is a good time to buy something pretty, redecorate something (home or self) or ask important questions – a raise? 🙂 Saturn, planet of boundaries and responsibility, is also in Libra now and will do its best to curb any excess tendencies.

Venus (planet of love & relationships), ruler of both Taurus and Libra, is very comfy when the Moon is in one of its signs – go out and be with people.

FYI : As always, a Full or 3rd quarter Moon denotes the start of the “waning” Moon phase (the Sun & Moon are opposite each other) – use this time to clear out old things, or even ways of thinking, to make space for  the ‘New” coming in.

Book Corner: Zora Neale Hurston

Writer, story teller and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, 1891 – 1960, started to publish right after the height of the Harlem Renaissance.  The ability to support oneself with art that explored the African-American experience waned with the onset of the depression and she fell into obscurity until re discovered by Alice Walker (“The Color Purple”).

Her work gained attention again with the introduction of college Black literature classes during the 70”s.  She was found and embraced by a whole new generation (including me). Her novels, short stories and poetry are now also taught in women’s studies and general literature courses.

Ms Hurston studied cultural anthropology at Barnard College and Columbia University.  As a “folklorist”, she wrote and sang in the rural style and dialect of the people she remembered from the all black town of Eaton, FL where she was born and of the folks she met while traveling across the south.

Perhaps her most famous book, “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, 1937, is about “Janie”, who managed to make her way thru life and find love during a time and in a place very difficult for a woman’s survival. (This was made into a TV movie a few years ago with Halle Berry)

This past January, there was a  “Zora” Festival in her hometown of Eatonville, Florida. Zora Neale Hurston’s life and work were celebrated with readings, panel discussions, local refreshments and a concert – folks being folks (she would have liked that).

Astrology: Moving Planets – Lots of Activity in Taurus!

The sign of Taurus will be hosting 2 high powered planets- Venus and Mercury- for several weeks at the end of March/beginning of April, 2010. Planet transits vary in length adding energy to a sign and can impact the individual wherever it falls in their chart. Taurus is a very dependable, practical sign that respects money, hates debt, loves beauty and comfort.  To paraphrase a line from my favorite musical “Westside Story” – “Who knows…Somethin’s coming and it’s gonna be great”.

Venus rules the sign of Taurus and glides in on Wednesday March 31 until April 25, 2010.  Often referred to as the planet of love, Venus is all about relationships and is very comfortable in this sign. Think peace, love, good food and budget talks with a significant other?  (Or, a close family member.)

Mercury, the usually speedy communications planet, moves into Taurus on April 2 until June 10, 2010. During this time frame, the planet will slow its pace and go retrograde on 4/18 – it will stop going backward and go direct again on 5/11/10.  Earthy, grounded Taurus will bring weight to the quick, “chatty Kathy” Mercury. Use this time to think things through – to change your mind if need be.

BTW:  Taurus rules the 2nd House in the Astrology chart – It is the House of possessions, money (what we do with it/how we feel about it), what we think is “valuable”.

The” R” Word – Retired: How Did They Get My Name?

I’ve been retired 6 months and I’m holding fine.  As mentioned in my 3 month update, I’m enjoying my new status, but,  I ‘m now beginning to get strange mail. How did they get my name? How did they know I’m going to be 65?

I will be 65 soon and Social Security of course is aware of my Medicare eligibility and they send enrollment information a few months in advance, but what other list am I on??  – How do these companies know how old I am?

My mail box is stuffed with brochures that say in bold print – “Important”, “Urgent”:

“It’s Medicare Time- Part A, Part B and Part C. “

“It’s Insurance Time – Long Term, Term Life, supplemental.  “

“It’s time to reassess your savings/non savings”

“It’s time to sell the house and go urban”

Baby Boomerism is an industry all its own. How to buy/how to save. Where to move/where not to move.  The best cities for those on limited income. The best companies to work for if you’re over 50. Job tips for older workers, etc.

There are also tons of emails – When did I request an “Orbit Power Wheel chair”?

Someone is getting rich off these “retirement issues“and it probably isn’t a retiree. (I have no doubt that it is a 20 or 30 something taking advantage of the middle age explosion – books/websites/money planners, etc.)

However, this old geezerette has kept her faculties and will wade thru it all and make the best choices possible and delete/tear up the useless stuff.

Life is good. Medicare rocks!

Astrology: Last Stages of the Pisces Sun

The Sun moves out of the 12th, final Sun sign of the Zodiac, Pisces.  The Sun has transited all 12 signs and is ready to start the cycle anew in Aries, the 1st sign.  This is a great opportunity for us to finish up any odds and ends so that we go forward into high energy Aries with a clean slate. The Spring Equinox brings a new astrological year with new chances to shine.
